Assembling Technology

Wind turbine blades

We were asked to prototype a wind turbine blade in an industry-university joint development project and assigned the responsibility for the three-dimensional design to manufacture steps of the project. Considerably severe conditions were specified, including fluid dynamic lines from the upper and lower surfaces of the blade, asymmetric lines of the upper and lower surfaces, maximum panel thickness of 0.6 mm for weight reduction, reduction of wind resistance (countersunk rivet construction), countersunk rivet positioning accuracy, and blade strength. The prototype blade measures 800 mm long. The mass-production blades are 2000 mm long with a further increase to 2500 mm. Another weight reduction of 20% is demanded.
We entered our exhibits from the first to tenth Annual Precision Sheet Metal Technology Fairs and received several awards in the process. We think that the main reasons for our awards at the 19th fair were the three-dimensional design and fabrication entirely with standard tools, not dedicated tools.
The Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun Award, Gold Award, and Special Encouragement Award are really boosts for us. We will make the most of our awards in motivating our personnel and nurture our young employees.
